XTU Campus Network
The Xiangtan University (XTU) campus network obtains two domain names of www.xtu.edu.cn and www.xtu.cn. After expansion, upgrading and transformation, it now has achieved full coverage through both the wired and wireless access.
The campus network, through the deployment of four high-performance core devices, is a full two-layer network topology consisting of the exchange layer, the regional aggregation exchange layer, and the end user access layer. It has high security, reliability and extendibility. The devices, interconnected with each other through the 40G fiber optic link, form a backbone “loop network” to guarantee the link bandwidth for data exchange. The four core devices create a virtual logical unit through virtualization technology. Once an equipment failure occurs, others can achieve the millisecond-level failover, which protects normal network operation from being affected. The four virtualized core devices can automatically conduct load sharing within the system to achieve inter-device link aggregation and link load sharing.
The core campus network maintains a transmission speed of ten Gigabit or one Gigabit to aggregation, and one Gigabit or 100 megahertz to the end user. It has network ports access to China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Education and Research Network (CERNET) with an output bandwidth of 11 Gbps. The output traffic data is distributed through the flow control equipment. The IPv6 has been opened as a supplement to the IPv4, with 20 complete C-CERNET IP addresses, 32 China Telecom IP addresses, 29 China Mobile IP addresses, and 5 China Unicom IP addresses. Offices, teaching buildings, and student’ dormitories have got access to the wired and wireless campus LAN, so as to meet the basic requirements of teaching, research, management, and learning. The present campus network backbone links and the network platform devices are able to meet operation and construction demands in the next 5 to 10 years. In May 2016, free wireless campus network were opened in Hingxiang canteen, piano cafe, and library and its front yard, providing more convenient network services for faculties and students.
The campus network provides basic WEB, E-MAIL, and DNS services. It also serve the faculties living outside the campus and some postgraduates through VPN access, which enables them to share campus network resources via public network. The users are required to register with their real names. A security system composed of firewall and WAF system is adopted to ensure the campus network stable operating.
As of Dec. 2016, there are 61,014 campus network uses for teaching, research, administration, and individual purposes, including 40,524 mailbox users and 1,388 VPN access users. It contains 42,548 network nodes and 49 proxy servers.
The first XTU web portal was started construction in May 1997. After several revisions, the latest website, including Chinese and English versions, began official operation on June 1, 2016. There are 148 independent subordinated websites under the portal system, including 22 colleges and schools, 28 administrative departments, 2 organizations, 9 units directly affiliated to XTU, 44 research institutions, and 43 special coverage sites.
A smart campus framework has been basically formed, based on integration of information systems, including the unified identity authentication, personal information portal, the second-phase campus card system, and access control systems for student apartments and college buildings. All these systems are put into operation.
